BERWICK IN THE MID-1840s

Evan Owen is credited with the founding of Berwick in 1786. The U.S. census for Berwick in 1840 reported its population at 452. There were two important turnpikes, Susquehanna & Lehigh and Susquehanna & Tioga that served the town. The former incorporated in 1804 ran from Easton to Nescopeck, a community across the river from Berwick. The construction of a toll bridge in 1814 connected Berwick and Nescopeck. The other turnpike received its charter in 1808; it began in Berwick and reached Towanda by 1818. Building the North Branch Canal occurred along the north bank of the Susquehanna River and commenced in Berwick in 1828. By 1856 it operated from New York to Northumberland. Mordecai Jackson and George Mack in 1840 built a foundry at the corner of Third and Market Streets to produce farm implements. By 1872 this business had evolved into the Jackson & Woodin Manufacturing Company and later merged into the American Car and Foundry Company.
