Ikeler's Church
from the collection of Donna Laubach
Laying the corner stone for Ikeler's Church that belonged to the
Methodist Episcopal denomination located in Mr. Pleasant Township, Columbia
County, Pennsylvania, occurred on May 27, 1900, one hundred years ago. In
four months the church was built and dedicated on September 30, 1900.
William Ikeler in his will, dated September 25, 1876, provided the land for a
graveyard and for a church, if desired.
The following article concerning the dedication of Ikeler's Church appeared in a
Bloomsburg newspaper, The Democrat Sentinel, on September 28, 1900:
This coming Sabbath, September 30, [will be] the dedication of
the M. E. church at Ikeler's. This has long been felt as a needed
addition to this community. A church has long [been] talked of but
poverty always came with its plea and the project faded out. But last
spring the matter again presented itself and the ground was donated just
opposite the Ikeler Grave Yard on the hill above Jackson Ikeler's and the work
was begun under much opposition, but still it continued until now Sunday,
September 30, this neat and commodious little building will be set apart for
the use and worship of
Almighty God.
The following is a copy of the order of worship: Sunday morning 10 a.m.
a sermon by Rev. W. M. Frysinger, D.D., of Bloomsburg; at 3 p.m. a sermon by
Rev. J. N. Bettens, of Waller; Dr. Frysinger will have charge of the after
meeting at 4 p.m., the Dedication service; in the evening at 7:30 p.m. a
sermon by Rev. T. M. Phillips, of Washingtonville.
