ORANGEVILLE CIRCA (1920)
The photograph is a view of Orangeville, circa 1920, taken at the
intersection of Main and Pine Streets. The building on the left was a
general store operated by B. F. Quick and later by Leon Brewer. Across
the street where the steps are was the entrance to the Farmers National
Bank. The street view is Main Street, that ultimately became State Route
487, which went north to Benton.
Clemuel G. Ricketts who had moved from Fairfield County in Ohio to
Fishing Creek Valley is credited with creating a settlement at the base
of Knob Mountain in 1822 that would eventually become Orangeville. Four
years later it had a post office and school. The decision to name the
community Orangeville came from the fact that many of the people in
Fishing Creek Valley had come from Orange, New Jersey, and Orange
County, New York. Orangeville became a borough on February 20, 1900. The
community had railroad service provided by the Bloomsburg and Sullivan
Railroad that ran from Bloomsburg to Jamison City. The Conner Implement
Works that made farm machinery was the major employer at the time of
this photo.
Many thanks to Donald Brewer for allowing the Society to use this
photograph.
