Photo of the MonthJune 2000BLOOMSBURG'S FIRST HIGH SCHOOLBloomsburg's first public high school occupied the northwest corner of Centerand First Streets, across from the entrance to the Rosemont Cemetery. Along Center Street the building ran sixty-two feet and four inches with a depth of ninety-two feet and six inches along First Street. The corner tower protruded seven feet toward Center Street and four feet and five inches on the south side. It existed on the site where Columbia County had its jail from the late 1840s to the late 1870s. The cost for the school, including the lot, came to approximately $24,900 and was dedicated on December 2, 1889. It remained in use for nearly thirty-four years until a fire completely destroyed the school early on the morning of October 23, 1923. The community built a new school across the street on the northeast corner of Center and First Streets on an old cemetery lot after removing the graves. The new school opened its doors to students on March 14, 1927. |
