LUMBERJACKS AND THEIR CAMP BUNKHOUSE

Circa 1905

This very old, tattered, and marked photograph shows a log bunkhouse and thirty-two men at a lumbering camp run by the Central Pennsylvania Lumber Company on North Mountain. The trees that the men cut went to the company’s large sawmill at Jamison City, near the northern boundary of Columbia County in Sugarloaf Township. A close examination of the picture reveals a number of lumbering tools, a lumberjack sharpening his ax while another person turned the grindstone, the second and third men from the far left wearing aprons, probably the cooks, and most of the men ranging in age from the late twenties to the forties.
