Benton in Winter

A winter view of Main Street in Benton, Pennsylvania, sometime between the
late 1880s and 1910, most likely around 1900.  Notice the number of horse
drawn sleighs on the snow packed street.  In this era before the use of the
cars and trucks, it was commonplace for streets and roads not to have the
snow removed since the sleighs and sleds would use the roads.  The Exchange
Hotel built in 1872 by Hiram Hess is in the foreground to the left and
farther down the street on the right was the McHenry House which James Boyd
McHenry erected in 1886.
