BLOOMSBURG THIRD STREET SCHOOLBloomsburg School Directors started consolidating the different common schools in Bloomsburg in 1870. First, they built a two-story brick school on the north side of East Fifth Street, one block west of East. Then in 1873 the school board authorized a second two story brick building with a cupola located on the south side of Third Street, atop a hill between West and Railroad Streets. It was similar in design to the Fifth Street School. A Bloomsburg newspaper, The Democratic Sentinel, reported the students who attended school in the Old Academy on the northwest corner of Jefferson and Third Streets, marched in en masse two blocks west on Third Street to their new school on November 4, 1874. The Third Street School closed as did the Fifth Street School when the Memorial Elementary School opened in 1953 on the southwest corner of Market and Fifth Streets.
