The Greenwood Seminary

The Greenwood Seminary established through private efforts by thirteen stockholders in 1850 was in Millville.  The school housed in this three storied building located along Main Street was near the Friends Meeting House, and what is today Millville Park.  In 1875 the Fishing Creek Monthly Meeting of Friends assumed responsibility for administering the school.  At different times in the 1880's it was a public school and a private school under the auspices of the Friends.  By the time of World War I, the building had fallen into disrepair and no longer functioned as a school.  Afterwards, with financial support from the Millville citizens, the building became a community hall.. Dean Girton in his book, Millville: The First 200 Years, wrote:  "The Community Hall became a culture and entertainment center, and for many years the Chautauqua and the Lyceum courses, with their many traveling, talented people, gave the residents of the area programs which they could not otherwise view."  The building that served the community for more that a century came to an end when it was demolished in 1966.
