North Branch Canal Aqueduct Crossing Fishing Creek at Rupert

The aqueduct over Fishing Creek was one of many built to enable the North Branch Canal to traverse the numerous streams as it followed the north bank of the Susquehanna River from Nanticoke to Northumberland.  The canal began operating in late October 1830 between Berwick and Nanticoke.  By the end of September 1831, the water filled the canal channel from Nanticoke to Northumberland, a distance of forty-two miles.  In the mid-1850s the canal was extended to the New York state line.
