Apr 24,2008 - - - - Terry Mattison Surnames: Harris/Girton/Blue/Park I have done some research on these lines...much has been done on the Park and Blue families. I am, at this time, more interested in researching my Harris line - I have a Martinus/Martin Harris who died approx 1813 in Greenwood Twp, his widow is Rachel Girton Harris. They had at least three sons, two of which relocated to Aledo, IL. And am curious about a "Harris ferry" in Greenwood twp. I will be visiting this area during approx May 7, 8th of 2008 and wish to know of libraries or other resources that I may want to visit.
Apr 13,2008 - - - - JC Henry I am seeking information on John GILROY b. ca 1784 prob England and Margaret (WILSON) GILROY b. ca 1803 prob England. They immigrated to Columbia County in 1850 from Nova Scotia. I believe this is the family in 1840 census: *Source Information: 1840 Fed Census PA, Columbia Co., Liberty Township GILROY, John 1 M (5/Under 10) could be Robert Wilson GILROY 1 M (50/Under 60) could be John GILROY 1 F (Under 5) ???? found no evidence of this child 1 F (10/Under 15) could be Mary GILROY 1 F (30/Under 40) could be Margaret WILSON Robert Wilson GILROY m. Frances OWEN d/o of Hudson OWEN and Emily JACKSON. Mary (sometimes shown as Margaret) m. William GARSON/CARSON. They had 9 children. Mary and the youngest child died in Mar 1867 during childbirth. In 1850 census, Robert Wilson GILROY and younger brother John are shown living with sister Mary and her husband William GARSON. *Source Information: 1850 Fed Census Bloom Twp., Columbia, PA Aug 23. 1850 by Charles Cook 280 291 GARSON, Wm 30 M Occ furnaceman Scotland 280 291 GARSON, Mary 22 F PA 280 291 GARSON, Mary E 1 F (twin) PA 280 291 GARSON, Marg A 1 F (twin) PA 280 291 GILROY, Robert 15 M PA [brother in-law] 280 291 GILROY, John 9 M PA [brother in-law] I'm hoping to find out what happened to their parents during the years 1840 and 1850. Any insight that can be provided would be much appreciated. Regards, JC Henry REPLY: Our volunteer researchers could look for local , immigration, church and newspaper records in then-Columbia County between 1840 and 1850. Please click on "Research Service" on our website homepage, then print off and fill out the Request for Research Service" form and send it to the address on the form together with a check for $15. However, if the family was still in Canada until 1850, our records here would probably not show anything.
Apr 3,2008 - - - - Luanne Looking for information on Martin Eyer whose son Ludwig laid out the town of Bloomsburg. Thanks! ***RESPONSE: As it happens, we researched the Eyers’ roles in founding Bloomsburg and the results were published in the Society’s Newsletter vol. 16:4 (Dec. 2001) and also as Chapter 3 in the bicentennial observance book Discovering Bloomsburg (2002); those items trace Johann Martin Eyer to Europe. We can send a photocopy of these pages if you will send us your postal return address along with a printout of this message and a check or money order for $5.00 to cover photocopy and postage charges. W. Baillie
Mar 22,2008 - - - - John G. Shaffer Hi Looking for any information concerning Harrison and Margaret Shaffer. Children were MC (1850), William (1854), Emma Jane (1857), and John A. Harrison (1834-1914) and Margaret (1831-1897) lived in Bloomsburg from 1850 until his death in 1914. ****REPLY: Hi John. We have two files on Shaffer families in Columbia County, and we can probably find death notices in local newspapers, possibly find the family’s location on an 1870 or 1876 map, etc. If you would like a volunteer to search for such items, please click on “Research Service” on our website homepage, then print off and complete the “Genealogical Research Request Form” and send it in with a $15.00 check for the first hour of research.
Mar 21,2008 - - - - James Wright Searching for Wright is like researching Smith, Tayler, Hunter, etc. I found MY Wrights in Mifflintown, PA. The records only go back to the middle 1700's, with the prominate names of John and Jacob, which appear a lot through our line. I recently found a reference to Wright's Ferry, which again has John and Jacob as the paternal ancestors, but they go back to the 1600's! I would love to make a connection. Can anyone help?
