A man named 1 CONC Richard Gates [Dave - yes, it says Richard, but the second article 1 CONC corrects it], who has been running a steam saw mill near Mr. Thomas' 1 CONC place, just in the edge of Barry county, took a flat-bottom skiff and 1 CONC went out into the lake with his wife, leaving at his house near the shore 1 CONC their three children. About twilight the children came down to the beach 1 CONC and hailed their parents; wished to ride, but Mr. Gates refused their 1 CONC request, and bade them go home and light the lamps and they would soon 1 CONC follow home. The children did so, and the two in the boat then went 1 CONC across the point; and were seen by the children for some distance until 1 CONC it became too dark to distinguish any object on the lake. All night the 1 CONC children waited at home for the return of their parents, but in vain; in 1 CONC the morning the boat was found along the shore bottom side up. There had 1 CONC been no storm and the lake was quiet all night. Great excitement is felt 1 CONC by all the people. Nothing can be found of their bodies. Whether it was 1 CONC accidental drowning, or murder and suicide, no one can tell at present." 1 CONT The second from Aug. 18th, 1871: 1 CONT "The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Gates who were drowned in Gull Lake 1 CONC some two months since, an account of which was published in this paper at 1 CONC the time, have been recovered. That of Mr. Gates was found Saturday last 1 CONC on the north shore. The body of Mrs. Gates was found Sunday on the west 1 CONC shore. Both bodies were very much decomposed but were easily 1 CONC identified. We are indebted to Mr. Anson Wooding, of Hickory Corners, 1 CONC for the above item." 1 CONT 1 CONT Robert Diamond's writings state that his father "had a sister who died at 1 CONC one and one half years old." 0 @I117@ INDI 1 NAME Eliza Jane /Caldwell/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE 1831 2 PLAC Galesburg, IL? 2 SOUR Fred E. Alexander appears in the 1 CONC Northumberland/Columbia county census for 1810 - his family consists then 1 CONC of himself (listed as over 45), one female 26-45 (presumably his wife), 1 1 CONC female 10-16, one male under 10, and 2 females under 10. Some of the 4 1 CONC children may have been workers or live-ins but some were undoubtably 1 CONC children or grand-children. 1 CONT 1 CONT I have been able to find no record of Alexander in Columbia County after 1 CONC he sold his land in 1816. Since there is no will on file for him at the 1 CONC Bloomsburg Courthouse, it is likely that he moved away from the county 1 CONC some time between then and 1820. 1 CONT 1 CONT There is no obvious connection between Alexander and the rest of the 1 CONC Vances in Columbia County, but given his age he may very well have been a 1 CONC brother of George Vance and/or John Vance, Sen. 0 @I209@ INDI 1 NAME Margaret /?/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE AFT 1765 2 PLAC ? 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 FAMS @F091@ 0 @I210@ INDI 1 NAME /?/ 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1800 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 FAMC @F091@ 0 @I211@ INDI 1 NAME /?/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1800 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 FAMC @F091@ 0 @I212@ INDI 1 NAME /?/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1800 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 FAMC @F091@ 0 @I213@ INDI 1 NAME /?/ 1 SEX F 1 BIRT 2 DATE ABT 1790 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 FAMC @F091@ 0 @I214@ INDI 1 NAME John /Vance/, Sen 1 SEX M 1 BIRT 2 DATE BEF 1775 2 PLAC Ireland (?) 1 DEAT 2 DATE UNKNOWN 1 FAMS @F092@ 1 NOTE @NI214@ 0 @NI214@ NOTE 1 CONC John Vance, Sen appears in many records in early 1800s, but in none of 1 CONC them is his relationship to the rest of the Vances listed. Clearly he is 1 CONC NOT the father of John Vance, Jun, since there is confirmation that John, 1 CONC Jun was the son of George Vance, so the "Jun" was just used to tell the 1 CONC two Johns apart. John Vance, Sen's age is estimated from census 1 CONC records. In the 1820 census he is listed only with another male 10-20 - 1 CONC a son or live-in worker? 1 CONT 1 CONT In 1828 John, Sen sold his land to George Vance, Sen and John Vance, Jun 1 CONC together and this is the last I was able to find of him in Columbia 1 CONC County. Since there is no will on file for him at the Bloomsburg 1 CONC Courthouse, it is likely he moved away from the county to parts unknown 1 CONC between 1828 and 1830, since he no longer appears in the 1830 county 1 CONC census. 1 CONT 1 CONT The most likely connection for John, Sen is that he was George Vance's 1 CONC brother, given their respective ages and the obvious connection between 1 CONC him and the rest of the Vances.
