Pioneer Families of Northern Columbia County, Pennsylvania: Articles by Kenneth Yocum and OthersThe Columbia County Historical and Genealogical Society is pleased to announce it has worked out an arrangement with Closson Press to publish a new book that will be of great appeal to its members and others interested in the early history and genealogy of this area. The title is Pioneer Families of Northern Columbia County, Pennsylvania: Articles by Kenneth Yocum and Others. Many thanks to Ann Brandt, a member of the Society and its librarian, for all of the work she did as the editor of the book. It consists of thirty-four articles on the ancestry of early settlers of Columbia County that appeared in the Argus, 1934-35, a newspaper published in Benton, Pennsylvania. They were written Kenneth Yocum, an aspiring young historian, about the earliest settlers and their immediate descendants. His intent was to continue the weekly series indefinitely, with the intent of researching and printing the ancestry of all of the early settlers of the area. His primary focus was on an early list of contributors to the first church in the area, St. Gabriel’s Church in Sugarloaf Township. However, since the list encompassed many located in other areas of Columbia County, it goes beyond just that township. Settlers in Jackson, Benton, Catawissa, and other townships are included. These articles have been collected, edited, and reprinted in book form, along with three other articles from local newspapers on early families from Millville and Greenwood Townships. Included are responses and additions from family members at the time the articles were published. Surnames include Appleman, Beishline, Cole, Eves, Heacock, Hess, Jackson, Keeler, Kester, Kline, Kramer, Laubach, Lemon, Lunger, McHenry, Parker, Patterson, Priest, Robbins, Roberts, Rhone, Titman, Whitman, and Yocum, plus many related families. The book is 118 pages, 8½ x 11, softbound, and has a complete index to all surnames. The book’s price is $12.72, including the sales tax. It will be available at the Society, on the second floor of Bloomsburg Public Library. You may also order the book by mail for $15.72 which includes postage and handling.
