1860 CUMMINGS MAP COLUMBIA AND MONTOUR COUNTIES The Columbia County Historical & Genealogical Society has available maps of townships, villages, and boroughs made by a laser digital copy machine from the 1860 Cummings Map of Columbia and Montour Counties. They contain a great amount of valuable information. Each map shows the roads with the number of perches (or rods, each sixteen and half feet in length) "as measured from one fork or junction of roads to the next." Also included are the topographical information, railroad, and other features such as churches by denomination, gristmills, iron furnaces, sawmills, and schoolhouses. Most importantly, for each township, village, and borough, the names of the various landowners are shown where they owned land. This can be very helpful for individuals doing genealogical and other kinds of research. The Cummings Map is the first detailed map of Columbia and Montour Counties. G. M. Hopkins, Jr., a civil engineer did the surveys; it is drawn to scale, one and half inch for one mile. T. S. Wagner of Philadelphia did the engraving and printing. The name of the map comes from the publisher, J. A. J. Cummings of Chillisquaque, Pennsylvania. Maps are reproduced in color on two different sizes of a standard sheet of white paper. The different sizes of sheets, 8� x 11 or 11 x 17, are dependent on the size of the maps to be copied. The maps are legible and easy to read.
